The Jolly Corks Wine Festival, coming Saturday, August 4th, is a project of the Pontiac Elks Lodge created to support major lodge causes: Illinois Elks Children's Care & Elks National Foundation. Our mission is to bring people together to enjoy great food, wine and musical entertainment mixed with spotlights of education about the causes we support.
The name “Jolly Corks” dates back to 1868. Elks Lodge Founder, Charles Vivian, an actor and comedian, was known to play a “cork trick” on fellow bar mates. The idea was to bounce your cork off the bar and catch it faster than the other guy. The last to retrieve their cork had to buy the round. However, Vivian never really let his cork go, so the unsuspecting participants always lost. The “cork trick” was continued until there was a group of 15 members, calling themselves the “Jolly Corks.” These were the founding fathers of the Benevolent & Protective Order of the Elks.
